2009 Convention Workshops

Here are just a few of the workshops that will be conducted at the IGCA Convention July 13-15, 2009, near Amana, Iowa. More workshop information will be added as they become available - so keep checking this page for more great classes that will be shared by IGCA members. Any questions? Just ask Alice.

 

BASIC AIR FRESHENERS

Observation Fee, $5 - Participation fee, $8

You will learn about a variety of quick and easy air fresheners to make for fun and profit. Participants will decorate and fragrance a precut air freshener. Also included for all to observe: reed diffusers, terracotta, aroma beads.

 

GOING GREEN WITH CANDLES

Observation Fee, $5 - Participation fee, $12

A variety of palm waxes, soy waxes as well as beeswax will be shown and discussed in this class. Participants will make a palm pillar candle and a soy container candle. Wick selection will be discussed as well.

 

SWIRLED PILLAR

Swirled candle will be made using discs of wax.

 
VOTIVE LONG STEM ROSES

Jim and Renee will use votives to create long stem roses - that can be used individually or in arrangements.

 

APPLIQUE DECORATED TAPER

Sculpturing wax will be used to make appliques that will then be applied to a 10-inch taper.

 

SHRINK WRAPPING CANDLES

Looking for an inexpensive way to make your candles more attractive to sell - AND to keep items clean? Bring along a candle, as Rick will be showing you how to more professionally market your wares.

 

WAX SACHETS or ORNAMENTS

This project uses left over or recycled wax to add fragrance to drawers and closets or to decorate your Christmas tree or a tree for any holiday.

 

 

ROLLED BEESWAX TAPERS

Using honeycomb beeswax sheets, you will learn how to roll a taper with a flat or tapered top.

 

VOTIVES -
BASIC TO UNIQUE

Votives will be made from beeswax, soy, palm, and paraffin. There will be plain or basic and many unique variations. Just a few are pictured. If someone has a votive they wish to share, please contact Alice. Participation fee includes votive cups for approximately 12 candles!

PERSONALIZING
WITH THE KISTKA

BASIC HURRICANE

A basic wax hurricane shell will be poured and prepared for decorating. It can then be used in the Decorating Hurricanes class.

 

MARBELIZED ROSE

Candles will be dipped using Magic Dip to create a marbleized look.

 

 

TWICE-POURED LAYERED STAR

Observation Fee, $5.00

You will be shown how to pour a twice-poured star candle. This candle is poured in white or a light color first and then a second darker color is poured in after a shell of the light color has formed. It is especially attractive when done in a star shaped mold.

 


REFILLABLE PALM SHELLS
WITH SOY CENTERS

2009 Workshop A

The vase shape in the back right corner has turned out to be the most popular. In this class, we will carve the top of the empty vase and fill it with soy container wax and observe a demonstration of making the shell to the point of carving. Wick recommendations for each size of refillable shell and instructions for the refills will be discussed. Also covered will be developing the concept from start to finish.

 

LAKE SUPERIOR
STONE CANDLE

2009 Workshop B

This candle is made with stones from Lake Superior. Stones from any area can be used. The candle could become a promotional piece for any area where their stones have outstanding beauty.

 

FRUIT CAKE

2009 Workshop C

Presented by Marianne Dietrich

Observation Fee, $10.00 - Participation Fee, $20.00

The Fruit Cake will be constructed from the bottom up in layers. The decorating of the top, melting sides and bottom, packaging and authentic labeling of loaf-shaped fruit cake will complete the project.

Jim will discuss the updates and changes made in the last two years in candle safety standards, as well as what is being proposed to make candles safer. This workshop is a must for anyone in the candle industry and especially for all candlemakers.


MANDLE
(A Man's Candle)

This a 3.5x5.5 inch candle that uses the shotgun shell casings that are usually left in the hunted field to create a candle for those hunters in your life.


CARVED CANDLE
USING CARVING FRAME

Candles are carved using the carving frame. They are made with oil vial inserts.


SLICED OR CUT
INLAID CANDLE

Inlaid slices are made by dipping a wire into multiple colors of wax to build up layers. The wire is removed and the wax is sliced. The slices are placed inside the mold and the warm scented wax is poured into the center of the mold.


JAMMED CANDLES

Silk flowers and other inserts plus an oil reservoir are put into the mold. Wax is poured to fill the mold. Then the candle is heated with a heat gun to show the flowers in relief.

The wax melt workshop will lead you from the very simple to very unique wax melts - all with enticing scents. Also included will be ideas for wax melters, holiday and seasonal melts as well as different types of packaging.

 

BEESWAX MINI
BOTANICAL LUMINARY

You will mold a 100% beeswax luminary, decorate it with Michigan wildflowers, seal with paraffin and finish the top. Size is approximately 3.5" x 4".

Sandy will share her ideas for creating hang tags, pricing labels, brand identification,
candle protection, seasonal embellishments. Idea sharing will be encouraged.

 
DECORATED HURRICANE CANDLES

Several methods of decorating hurricanes will be shown. Each participant will choose one method to be used on a hurricane made in the basic hurricane class or one provided.
